And it’s on the UEFA Cup I have decide to launch myself in, with a couple of handicapped results paired up in a double that could send me back up the way again.

Marseille v Spartak Moskva

A Marseille squad full of confidence will host Spartak at the Velodrome tonight, and all aspects of the game tend to lead towards a local win, and a convincing one. After weeks of mayhem down the Souther French coast, the big guns are now back to full speed, 4 wins and one draw in both the league and cup campaigns in the last 5 games having given Gerets and his mens’ morale a real boost.

Cisse is back on target. Niang is back the African Cup of Nations, Nasri is fit to play, Valbuena is unstoppable. No doubt Marseille will be looking to use their form and Spartak’s injury problems to seal victory tonight.

The Russians, who have sold Geder to Le Mans, have lost Martin Jiránek, Ignas Dedura and Roman Shishkin through injuries. New signing Yegor Filipenko is ineligible and a couple of youngsters will be fielded in defense tonight at the Velodrome.

Verdict: Asian Handicap -1.0 on a Marseille win @2.28.

Benfica Lisbon v FC Nurnberg

German Bundesliga struggling side FC Nurnberg will be hoping to repeat their good European performances away to Lisbon on Thursday, having managed to finish as runners-up behind Everton in their group stage.

But although very respectable, the wins over a struggling AZ Alkmaar and Greek minnows Larisa are far from being comparable to an away win against Benfica, which remains very much unlikely.

The Portuguese giants are not at the same level as FC Porto in their domestic league, but remain Portugal’s second best defense and attack, Cardozo and Nuno Gomes having shown all their skills this season.

Former Bielfeld coach Thomas von Heesen has just taken the reins of Nurnberg, following the sacking of Hans Meyer, and the absence of midfielder Zvjezdan Misimovic (torn ankle ligaments) will not help the newly-appointed manager on his European debut.

Verdict: Nurnberg are battling against relegation in Germany. The club has yet to be settled following von Heesen’s appointment. I see a comfy win from Benfica. AH -1.0 @ 2.19.
