 Panathinaikos v Rangers Preview

Admin (Mon-Pari-Sportif.com)  - Tough games to pick from tonight in the UEFA Cup, I must admit I found it difficult to make my mind up on a large number of encounters.

I however decided to go for this Panathinaikos v Rangers game, with the Greek giants set to make their Scottish counterparts pay for their missed Ibrox opportunities.

Novo wasted a handful of goal chances (three clear 100% 'my-granny-would-have-scored' opportunities) and Walter Smith and his men could well regret it tonight, in a hostile Apostolos Nikolaidis Stadium.

The Gers have attacking options with Cousin, Boyd, Naismith, Novo, Buffel all available, but Jean-Claude Darcheville is still out, still serving his suspension. Having watched the Scottish big guns play away to Kilmarnock at the weekend, and despite the convincing 0-2 win, I was far from impressed with the Blues’ play. Darcheville’s energy on the pitch was for me one of the only highlights of the game, and his absence could be an influential factor in Greece today.

Novo seems out of confidence, Cousin is out-of-favour with the fans and will probably be left on the bench, the only striking threat coming from Kris Biyd who will be raring to start (that’s the least we can say!).

But with Panathinaikos free from injury and suspension, the task ahead of the British side looks far from easy, the Greek having some incredible home statistics to show for ahead of this UEFA Cup game.

The Athens side has a ‘ridiculously’ high home goal conceding rate, having only let 6 efforts go into their net on their soil this term, which makes them by far the best defense of the league. Attack wise, they seem less skillful, but Salpigidis (and his 11 league goals) will be keen to make his mark on the encounter tonight.

Simao could be left out, and make way to free-kick specialist Andreas Ivanschitz, and Rangers will need to be wary of any set-piece involving the ‘Austrian Beckham’.

Verdict: I reckon Rangers have missed their chance. I see Panathinaikos (and their boiling crowd) edge a narrow victory against Smith and his men @ 2.00.
