Manchester United v Lyon Preview

Admin (Mon-Pari-Sportif.com)  - Ferguson’s Red Devils lock horns with French defending champions Olympique Lyonnais tonight in the Champions League, in what should be an entertaining and high-quality game at Old Trafford.

The English side left Gerland with an unexpected 1-1, a late strike from Carlos Tevez putting a damper on a promising advantage for Perrin and his men. Now the Lyon squad goes into the second leg of this meeting as real outsiders, and there are more than one reason to this.

First of all, Man Utd are brilliant, and except a surprising derby defeat to City a few weeks back, one can recognize the excellence of the United squad. A 4-0 thrashing of Arsenal in the FA Cup, and two convincing wins over Newcastle (5-1) and Fulham (0-3) have confirmed the striking potential of the northern big guns, and things couldn’t be more promising as Ferguson’s men await Lyon at almost full strength.

Lyon, in the other hand, might not be push-overs, they’ve proved it during their first leg meeting with the English, and also at domestic level, but things are not running as smoothly this season. There seems to be some fragility within the squad. Two defeats to Le Mans (in the cup and in the league), two unconvincing wins over lowly Metz (2-0), and Lille at the weekend (0-1), alongside some tensions between a couple of players and the coach  have confirmed the champions were not at the best.

Benzema is the real danger for United, the French international having already proved he can score from anywhere, if well served, and United will be wary of this threat, but players such as Ronaldo, Giggs, Tevez, and Rooney should prove too strong for the French outfit, who will need to score at least two to go through.

I don’t see a surprise from Lyon here. United should advance in the competition.

Verdict: The odds on a win or handicap are too low for an interesting bet (for me). I am gonna go for a type of bet I don’t usually go for: Draw / Man Utd @ 4.33 for a HT/FT result. It should b a close one, and I expect both sides to be very careful at the start of the game.
