 Ligue1 double: Rennes & Strasbourg

You often fall in love with facts and self-beliefs and you can not even consider other issues to games already played and won in your mind. This is kind of the case with this French Ligue 1 double I am about to detail: Rennes v PSG 14th Rennes host 17th-placed PSG tonight as both sides try to drift away from the relegation zone. Guy Lacombe’s men have managed to put an end to an awful winless run thanks to a 2-0 win over Lorient a fortnight ago, and no doubt the hosts will be hoping for a repeat performance against a diminished PSG. The capital’s outfit are without Digard, striker Luyindula, and best passing player Jerome Rothen, while Pauleta is still short of fitness with a thigh problem, but could play tonight. Rennes coach Guy Lacombe, who was sacked by PSG not so long ago, has a strong squad for the PSG meeting, with Wiltord, Pagis, Briand and former PSG man Jerome Leroy all set to make their mark on tonight’s game. Verdict: PSG are struggling in the league. Without Rothen and Luyindula, it will be difficult for them. I see a win from Rennes, not as comfortable as Bordeaux’ last weekend. Strasbourg v Metz Mid-table Strasbourg host bottom side Metz in what should be an interesting and open game. Metz do perform much better since Pouliquen has been named coach, but they still have problems away from home. Strasbourg have got their ups and downs, but last weekend’s 0-1 win away to Le Mans will be in the players’ heads, as the northern side attempt to seal back-to-back victories, thing they haven’t done since August. RCS’s Columbian striker Wason Renteria, with 8 goals this season, will definitely play a big role in tonight’s game, but the main news for me is the absence of FC Metz’ playmaker Gygax, who had to stay put with a calf injury. Verdict: Strasbourg got thrashed 0-3 by Metz in the Cup only a month ago. It’s revenge time. Final thoughts: as I said, you always fall in love with well-funded theories. Time will tell on this double, but odds @ 4.32 are more than cracking.
